“I started medical school planning a career for rural family practice. But in my first year, I was able to go to the operating room weekly with a local surgeon and I was totally captivated. I love the act of doing surgery, but as I have matured and the ‘wow’ factor has diminished. I find I am intrigued and challenged by teaching patients about their condition and helping them feel confident as they go through treatment. I sometimes envision the surgeon’s role being like that of a mountain guide: I can help my patients know what to expect and how to best prepare for it, and offer support and encouragement along the way, but each patient has to climb their own mountain.”Beth Dayton, MD
