We do this by using our critical thinking skills to quickly determine the scope of the problem, manage symptoms effectively, and formulate recommendations for our provider partners. Our care includes following through on our patient’s needs and requests with appropriate and coordinated nursing actions.

We are currently recruiting a Triage RN to join our busy practice!

Position Overview:

The Triage Nurse is key to department success because they provide critical oncology nursing expert advice to drive positive patient experience and clinical outcomes. This position is responsible for providing telephone and electronic communication with patients and the clinical team, being adept within the electronic medical record, optimizing team resources to better meet patient priorities, delegating to CMA staff, providing patient and family education, and keeping up to date on oncology disease processes and medications to best care for our patient population. This person also serves as a liaison between infusion, clinic providers, and support staff.

Essential Job Functions

  • Communicates professionally and with compassion via phone and EMR patient portal
  • Formulates symptom management responses quickly and calmly
  • Responds to patient calls and prioritizes incoming patient messages based on triage need
  • Helps patient navigate between specialty team and primary care team
  • Gathers medical history through EMR and patient portal
  • Communicates situations with provider team in SBAR, presenting recommendations based on understanding of patient needs and critical thinking skills
  • Performs all callbacks as requested by the clinical team
  • Enters all pertinent communications with the patient into the medical record and routes appropriately for review
  • Evaluates the need for prescription refills, effectiveness of medication, or medication changes
  • Assesses patient compliance with medications, treatments, and appointments
  • Optimizes the use of team resources by establishing patient priorities and advising the medical assistants, advanced practice practitioners, or physicians of patients’ needs
  • Provides instructions and directions to patients and families on managing side effects related to disease process and related treatments
  • Provides patient and family education and serves as an educator for nursing and other staff
  • Delegates appropriately to unlicensed personnel
  • Performs all other duties assigned by supervisor

Required Qualifications:

  • Nursing degree (Baccalaureate, Associate or Diploma) from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current RN License in State of Oregon
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or attain within 12 months of hire
  • Basic Life Support certification within 2 months of hire
  • Must have strong computer skills, including the ability to work with medical software
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to work with a diverse patient population
  • Manage multiple changing priorities in an effective, organized manner

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of nursing experience
  • Oncology clinic experience
  • Spanish speaking
